Monte Ito-Bill Gee Memorial Scholarship
The David S. Ishii Foundation, a non-profit, tax-exempt, 501c3
organization, serves to administer both the Monte Ito Memorial
Scholarship and the Bill Gee Memorial Scholarship. These scholarships
serve to perpetuate the memory of longtime Honolulu sportswriters Monte
Ito of the Honolulu Advertiser and Bill Gee of the Honolulu
Star-Bulletin. The scholarships are awarded to students whose interests
combine an appreciation of both journalism and golf. The scholarships,
$1,500 each, are funded by the Honolulu Advertiser and Honolulu
Star-Bulletin, respectively.

2008 Monte Ito-Bill Gee Scholarships
Maui High School graduate Kelcie Kawano and Kalani High School graduate Marc Arakaki were awarded the 2007-08 Monte Ito and Bill Gee Memorial Scholarship Awards, respectively. The $1,500 college scholarships honor the late Honolulu Advertiser and Star-Bulletin sportswriters.
Kawano will play for the University of Hawaii golf team in the fall, where she plans to pursue a career in writing and/or computer graphics and animation.
Arakaki also won a $2,500 David S. Ishii Foundation scholarship this year. He was Kalani's captain and most valuable player as a senior. Attending the University of Oregon, he hopes to make the golf team and major in political science and journalism.
